5th & 6th Grade
Hannah TerLaan is our 5th & 6th grade teacher. She has a passion for history, and is excited to teach Social Studies this year. This year our focus will be on Ancient Civilizations and how these early peoples began to share the world we live in today. Understanding the progression of these civilizations will allow students to recognize how they have contributed to unfolding the history of our world and their individual influence on culture and religion amongst many other essential ideals. Key topics covered include the Assyrians and Babylonians in Israel, the Ancient Egyptians, and the rise and fall of the Roman Empire.
Mrs TerLaan also teaches 6th grade Math and attempts to make math engaging and interactive as it is in the real world. This class is centered around problem-based learning and allows students to apply the content to their lives outside of the classroom. Students will be introduced daily to a new topic, and will be provided with instruction and practice to answer initial questions. Once students have a good understanding of the content, they will be asked to use various strategies to answer the more difficult questions. In this approach, each student will learn to think critically and communicate effectively how their mathematical thinking is evolving as they learn to use hands-on problem solving techniques.
